This morning on the news I saw that the number of children/teenagers being prescribed antidepressants has been rising over the last 7 years by 54%, after a dip in 2004, because of fears that they caused suicidal behaviour.
As a teenager I was on Fluoxetine for about 5 years and, yes, I felt suicidal on and off during this time. Young people have so much to deal with nowadays, drugging them for long periods of time does not help them tackle the real problems they they need help with.
In my opinion, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the best way to help them overcome so many mental health issues. I know the waiting lists for help are long, but it is so important they get this assistance.
I hope that one day our society will be more open about discussing mental health issues and tackling them. Most people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives, big or small, it’s part of the society we live in, unfortunately.
